I am thrilled that Hope by Twelve has decided to partner with Tesfa on this exciting new school in the Kembata region of Ethiopia. This school will be the village of Kololo’s very first school. Life in Kololo can be tough for a kid, especially for a young girl. Kololo farmers grow corn, ginger, teff, coffee, mangos, avocados, bananas, and godere, (which is a plant similar to potatoes). Children are expected to work the farms as young as age five. Children spend hours working in the fields, gathering water, and taking care of smaller siblings. In the past, a girl would have to walk over two and a half hours, each way, to get to any kind of school. Tesfa’s new Kololo school will educate hundreds of local children. Many, many lives will be changed.

As a sponsor you will be in from the very beginning. You can watch the school going up, Here. You will get to hear all about these eager learners, who are about to crack open their first books.

If you’d like to read more about the two former Kololo residents who inspired this project you can go Here.

Thanks to Molly Pitts for caring about these remarkable children, Kololo’s future readers, writers, and dreamers.

His death has really affected me, my heart dropped and my stomach ached when I heard the news-usually not my thing about celebrities/ceo’s, people I don’t know. But, I’ve been so loyal to his company almost my whole life (the day the Apple IIE came out) and he’s been loyal to me with his innovations and follow through. I sat up last night thinking about what he’s done for organizations like hope by twelve and came to the conclusion that without him there would probably be no social networking, texting, emailing, etc. at the level it’s at right now. Without all those things, we wouldn’t have our name spread around the world. That’s amazing to think. Ten years ago, even five, it would’ve been near impossible to coordinate a girlpod in another city, get word out to everyone to donate to this cause and that, or even have people know who we are. RIP Steve Jobs and thank you!

They’d much rather be hanging out with friends or doing anything else OTHER then school. Little do they know how lucky they are just to be able to go to school and get some sort of education. Girls around the world would LOVE the opportunity to attend school. They’d much rather be going to school then doing anything else. Just today I read this articleabout a 12 year old girl who shines shoes on the streets of Addis Ababa, competing with the boy shoe shiners, just so she CAN go to school. She earns up to $1.15/day. After three months of hard work, she now can put herself through school. You know what she says about it? “I had to go to school because I want to get knowledge,” said Meskerem. “Knowledge is how you become somebody.” So true. I think back to my school days-I hated school. Now I wish I could do it all over again with this perspective in mind.
